South Devon has an extensive coastline, which plays host to a multitude of water based sports and activities that you can try your hand at during your stay in Devon. Wherever there is a large body of water you will be sure to find a water activity whether it is wild swimming, kayaking or water skiing you will have plenty of sports to choose from. Below is a list of a handful of sports available in South Devon to choose from depending on your taste and fitness levels:
- Stand up paddle surfing
Stand up paddle boarding is a relatively new sport that was designed originally to help surfers paddle further distances in the sea and now, due to its increasing popularity, you can find the sport in the main waterways around the UK and in the South Hams. Waterborn in Kingsbridge is the best place to go in the South Hams if you want to give stand up paddling a go. This is a sport that is great for an all over body workout because you need to work your core, legs and arms to move the board with your paddle.
Devon has some of the UK’s best surf beaches so if you have never tried it before you should consider signing yourself up for a lesson or two. You can normally get lessons all year round even during the winter – that is what wetsuits are for! You can also hire a surf board for a day if there is good surf at your nearest surf beach. This is a great sport for pretty much everyone no matter your fitness levels because you can always stop if you have lost your strength. The thing to remember is not to go beyond your depth, your past surfing experience and swimming ability.
- Kayaking and canoeing
Kayaking and Canoeing are great activities that everyone can take part in. You can easily vary the challenges and workout by choosing a longer or more complex route through the many waterways and estuaries in South Devon. For a harder challenge you can even take on a few rapids – some of the best routes are towards Dartmoor.
Definitely not a sport for the faint hearted. The county offers some of the best windsurfing conditions in the UK for this popular sport. There are a couple of great courses available in Devon to choose from so you can choose a company that is closest to your Devon holiday accommodation.
- Wild swimming
Wild swimming can take place in the rivers and sea throughout Devon – so if you are the type of person that loves swimming in the open water no matter the weather or the time of year then wild swimming is perfect for you! Not only is this great exercise, it is also fun and a great way to see wildlife because they don’t notice you gliding up to them.
Kitesurfing is a relatively new sport that’s popularity is growing so rapidly as one of the ‘coolest’ sports in the UK with world class competitions. It is an exhilarating sport that combines the power of wind with Devon’s great surf. Similarly to windsurfing, kitesurfing is a high speed, all over body sport that requires balance and nerve.
