Stonehenge
Mystery meets history. That is exactly how I define Stonehenge.
Built around 3100 BC by people who had lived with no written accounts of their existence, this monument is definitely one of the world’s bigger wonder. The reason for this most popular monument is still unknown. People come here to witness one of the origins of civilization as they leave completely astounded on its idea and for some reason, left bewildered on the aura that it is creating during their visit.
The Stonehenge can be found in Wiltshire, England. It was built the same time the pyramids in Egypt are under construction. Coming here will give you that amazing experience of walking right on the land of the people who once have walked here thousands of years ago. That really is something.
Until now, the mystery remains on the reason behind its creation. On a top view, you will see that these stones were arranged on a circular formation. It could actually be compared to a sundial.
There have been many theories on what it was and is for. Some studies say that it’s for some spiritual or ceremonial use because of its relation to the sun and the moon. Others also believe that it serves as a calendar created by people of the olden times while others think that it’s for fertility reasons that’s why it was built.
But the theory of this as a sundial could actually work because it could’ve helped people from back then to know about time regarding when to harvest their crops, or when to sow those seeds and a whole lot more of activities that will involve time.
There are just too many theories created which makes the Stonehenge even more intriguing and somewhat magical. This site that is located in the area of Salisbury is not the one thing that will create the stir in you to be interested in the mysteries of the past. Roaming around here could also lead you to this prehistoric earthwork, which is the Avebury complex. It’s also known to be the most magnificent piece of a thing from the past in all of Europe.
Now focusing on Stonehenge, you need not to worry on coming here, as there is no entrance fee or any charges because it’s open for public viewing. This monument was built on 4 different stages. It has always been a puzzle to historians, archeologists and other scholars on how exactly these heavy stones were moved and formed by the people from way back then.
Our generation’s calculation estimated at least 500 men with leather ropes who could’ve worked on one stone pulling it and an additional of 100 men whose job were to lay the massive rollers fronting the sledge. It’s a whole lot of hard work!
Visiting Stonehenge will definitely awaken your interest on the history of the human race’s civilization. Imagine how we have come this far? From moving heavy rocks to downloading stuff from our palm gadgets which just involves the moving of our fingers, as we continue to make history with our new found lifestyle and culture.
I’d say that we still owe it to them who had lived before us. They never fail to inspire us to progress, to live, to be strong and be humble on the greater things that we could all achieve. The people who built the Stonehenge remained to be anonymous but will always be the people who have walked with greatness far beyond what they and we could imagine, especially on the years to come when the next generation will learn about this monument.
